YMCA Soap Box Derby Car Races This Weekend

soapOn Saturday, the Downtown Wichita Falls YMCA will host their annual Soap Box Derby Races on 9th Street. Brandon Brown is the Soap Box Derby Race Director for the W.F. Downtown YMCA.

“It’s a great event we have had for many years. It started in the 50’s, ran through the 60’s and 70’s but then went away for about 25 years. The last seven years they brought it back as a fundraiser and proceeds go towards scholarships for kids who can’t be a part of the program. No child is ever denied access to the YMCA and this is one way we are able to raise funds for that,” said Brown.

There are 35 racers in this years race 19 of which have never raced in the event before. The races are divided up into two divisions a Super-Stock division and a Super-Kid’s division. The Super Kids Division consists of double seated cars for kids with special need that might need help racing down the hill. Brown said the goal is to make the event as inclusive as possible.

“We want this to be a family friendly event that brings people to the downtown area the might not normally be otherwise,” said Brown.

Even if you’re not able to take part in the race Brown said a 40 vehicle car show will be taking place near the races. There will also be a bounce house, face painting, a dunking booth and even some snow cones for those who come out.

The event is completely free to the public and begins at 9:10 Saturday morning following a short parade and will end sometime around noon. The races are taking place on near the W.F. Downtown YMCA on 9th Street between Burnett Street and Scott Avenue.
