Law enforcement officials are investigating after a body was found on the Wichita County Mounted Patrol Rodeo Grounds Sunday morning.
Wichita County deputies received a call around 11am Sunday morning from the scene at 2501 Arena Road.
Officials said a volunteer with the rodeo grounds reported that there was a deceased person near the outdoor dance area of the grounds.
The Criminal Investigation Division and Crime Scene Technician for the county were called out to investigate.
The victim is a black male in his late 20’s or 30’s and has not been identified at this time. His body has been taken to the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas County.
Newschannel 6 spoke with a couple who lives across the street from the rodeo grounds. They said during the storms Saturday night they were moving their cars closer to their home when they heard a thud.
“The thump was a silver Ford van with California plates and it hit our ditch, then it hit the rail, then it hit our tree,” Ami Hiebert said.
Ami and her boyfriend rushed to the vehicle to see if the person inside needed help.
“There was nobody in there,” Hiebert said.
They called the police and said officials were outside their home investigating until 1am Sunday morning. Then around 11:30am deputies knocked on their door after the body was found across the street.
“They asked me about what happened last night and I told them. I told them the guy that had robbed the store, described his as a black male and wearing dark clothing. They said that kind of fits what we got across the street. But, he didn’t go into details and that’s all I know,” Darrin Weaver said.
Weaver and Hiebert said they think the person who crashed into their tree could be the person found on the rodeo grounds. But, Wichita County Sheriff’s officials said they have not determined a connection at this time, but will investigate all avenues.
