WFISD honored 26 of their best teachers Thursday night at the annual Teacher of the Year banquet. But this year, the celebration was twice as nice.

The district selected two final winners instead of one from the group of outstanding teachers. This year’s elementary teacher of the year was Amy Simmons from Jefferson Elementary. “I had a few former students at the back of the room when they announced my name,” Simmons said. “So that was a little surprising. It is very honoring and I am humbled and blessed.”

Gary Cunningham won the award for secondary teacher of the year. He teaches at Carrigan Career Center and says his job is one of his greatest joys and he enjoys getting to learn with his students everyday.

A big congratulations to both of them.
