Preparing Property For Severe Weather

tornadoAccording to the National Weather Service, Texas experienced the most severe weather in the country in 2015. Their data showed a combined total of 1,962 severe weather incidents including, 228 tornadoes, 783 hail storms and 951 high wind events.

State Farm Insurance found that Texas lead the nation last year when it came to severe weather claims with 52,477 of those being hail claims. Texas also lead the nation with 11,183 wind claims.

Eric Simpson works for State Farm as an insurance agent in Wichita Falls. Simpson said it’s important that families make sure they are insured to help with any possible financial trouble that could come in the wake of a severe weather system damaging their home or property. “We always will encourage you to make sure you take pictures, make a list, write down serial numbers you can store it digitally. You can store it off site, but we encourage you to have it in place,” said Simpson.

While documenting your belongings is important, Simpson said to review your coverage with your agent, understand deductibles and discuss market value of the replacement value of coverage on your property. However, Simpson stresses that documentation can be your biggest tool for ensuring the largest amount of coverage on any damaged items or property. “The problem is that if you don’t document you might leave out items that you had that you never reported,” said Simpson.
